If the application is exposed to high temperatures, it's important to select a material such as metal that can consistently tolerate high heat. Choosing a lower-temperature-capacity material would be ineffective, as the gasket would not be able to produce a suitable seal for very long.
Chemical compatibility should also be considered; selecting a gasket material that will not degrade from the liquid or gas passing through it is critical. For example, since Teflon is generally non-reactive, it is a good material to employ in applications with a lot of chemical flow. EPDM, on the other hand, is unable to handle certain chemicals, such as petroleum-based oils, and would degrade in the same setting.
The joint pressure, or the force applied to the junction sealed by the gasket, must be considered because the higher the pressure applied, the stronger the gasket material should be.
If a weaker material is chosen, the gasket may not seal correctly and wear out rapidly. Therefore, it's critical to select a material that meets the unique requirements of each application to prevent leaks.
Types of Gasket Material
Metal, rubber, and Teflon are three common gasket materials.
Metal Gaskets
Steel, copper, and nickel are frequently used to make metal gaskets. High-temperature, high-pressure applications benefit from these tough materials.
Jacketed gaskets are a subcategory of metal gaskets. The metal jacket still provides excellent durability, but the extra filler, generally graphite or ceramic, helps to provide the material with a more flexible seal, which is especially useful for covering uneven surfaces when plain metal is too flat. Metal gaskets are extensively utilized in the automotive and transportation industries.
Rubber Gaskets
Rubber gaskets are commonly used because they are extremely resilient, flexible, and perform well in environments with a lot of chemical flow and atmospheric elements.
Synthetic rubbers like Neoprene and EPDM are attractive alternatives since they can tolerate temperatures ranging from -60 °F to 300 °F (-51 °C to 149 °C).
The inert nature of neoprene and EPDM's exceptional water and weather resistance make them suitable gasket materials for use in the automotive and waterproofing sectors.
Teflon Gaskets
Due to its non-reactivity, Teflon is another popular substance. Teflon also has the lowest friction coefficient of any existing substance and can tolerate extreme cold and chemical flow without breaking down. Gasket materials are die-cut to match the precise requirements of each application.
Advantages of Gasket Materials
- Preventing leaks: One of the primary advantages of a gasket is that it prevents leaks between interjoining surfaces. A gasket is a device that bridges the gap between two surfaces and connects machine parts in order to reduce friction. Gaskets protect machinery from wear and ensure that they can be used safely.
- Preventing rust: Pipe flanges, for example, are prone to corrosion over time. The joints will corrode and break if they are not joined with a gasket. Corrosion is prevented by a variety of gaskets, including spiral wound gaskets.
- High-temperature resistance: Many industries employ gaskets, including petrochemicals, water and gas, and medicines, for their high-temperature resistance capabilities.
Applications of Gasket Materials
- Gasket materials are a variety of sealant-like compounds used to create gaskets. Gaskets are utilized in various industries, including automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing, to seal gaps in machine parts and prevent liquids and gasses from leaking.
- Rubber, polyurethane, neoprene, EPDM, Teflon, Viton, silicone, metals, cork, felt, paper, fiberglass, and many more materials are used to make gaskets.
- Gaskets are used when two or more adjoining elements must be tightly sealed together. They're most typically used to connect pipes, hoses, engines, motors, and a variety of other applications that require tight seals.
- Gaskets are usually formed of flat materials punched out of a sheet using a process known as die-cutting. In the process of stamping or cutting two-dimensional objects, a sheet of material is cut out.
- Some gaskets are designed for specific purposes, such as exhaust, high temperatures, low temperatures, or weather resistance. For any application, a certain material will provide the optimal gasket and sealing combination.
